NE Eighth Avenue Road Diet Community Meetings - Thursday, Jan. 11
OCALA, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2018) – In preparation for the NE Eighth Avenue Road Diet Project beginning in February 2018, the City of Ocala will host two community meetings Thursday, Jan. 11 at noon and 6 p.m. at the Discovery Center located at 701 NE Sanchez Ave.
This project will include microsurfacing and restriping of NE Eighth Avenue from E Silver Springs Boulevard to NE Bonnie Heath Boulevard. According to City staff, the microsurfacing will extend the life of the asphalt and the restriping will allow for safer traffic routes for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.
“Input from these community meetings will help determine the long-term, future design of NE Eighth Avenue,” said David Boston, Senior Planner, City of Ocala. “The Ocala 2035 Vision recommended using road diets to reduce the number of travel lanes, prevent speeding and to make roads more accessible for bicyclists and pedestrians. The restriping will reduce the number of vehicular travel lanes, provide bicycle lanes on both sides of the street, add turn lanes and crosswalks at several intersections and provide parallel parking in some areas.”
Local impacts of this project, including road closures, will be announced in the near future as details are finalized. This project will begin in the second week of February 2018 and is expected to conclude by the first week of March 2018.
Both community meetings will have a similar agenda, format and content. These meetings are free and open to the public; light refreshments will be provided.
