Late Sunday night, August 11, 2013, two men were struck by a truck while sleeping in the parking lot of an only restaurant on NW Blitchton Rd. in Ocala, and one did not survive the incident.
On Sunday, August 11, 2013, at approximately 11:41 p.m., officers responded to an empty lot, the site of the old Krystal Restaurant, addressed as 3751 NW Blitchton Road, Ocala, Florida 34475 reference a hit and run traffic crash.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the complainant, 51-year-old, Joseph F. Lack, Jr., of Tampa, Florida; Lack reported that he and his friend, whose identity is not being released pending next-of-kin notification, had stopped to rest/sleep before resuming their travels to Tampa in the morning. The pair was sleeping, on the ground, near the rear, or northernmost part of the old parking lot, near the tree-line.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a large, single-axle, dual rear-wheel truck pulled into, and circled, the parking lot; as the vehicle circled around, it passed over both Lack and his friend. Lack received minor injuries associated with being grazed by the undercarriage as the vehicle passed completely over him. The second victim was trapped underneath the vehicle and dragged for approximately 65 feet before becoming dislodged; the victim did not survive the injuries sustained. The driver, who has not yet been identified, did not stop; the vehicle exited the lot, negotiated a right turn onto NW Blitchton Road, and continued northbound on Interstate 75.

Our investigation is on-going. The crash scene is currently being processed for evidence and investigators are working with neighboring businesses purposed with obtaining surveillance videos.
