SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN ARMED ROBBERY CASE
Two of three suspects in an Armed Robbery on June 7, 2013 were located and arrested in Michigan on June 11, 2013.
On June 7, 2013, at just before 1:00 PM, officers responded to Project Healthy Choices, located at 903 N.E. Osceola Ave., in reference to a report of a Robbery. The victim, H/F Christine Alaniz, DOB 4/3/69, who is the Program Director/Counselor, reported to having missed a call on her cell phone from a B/M subject Kernal C. Duncan, DOB 3/15/71. Upon attempting to return the call, she saw him at the door of the business, which is kept locked. She unlocked the door and allowed Duncan and his girlfriend, W/F Heather Marie Swank, DOB 2/7/89, to enter; they had been clients of Alanizís for several years. Swank complained of a stomach ache and walked out of Alanizís view. When she returned, Swank had an unknown black male subject with her. The unknown subject was armed with what appeared to be a revolver type of gun. He then held the gun to Alanizís head and said, ďI donít want to kill you.Ē While this was going on, the phone in the office rang and Alaniz picked it up and yelled for the person on the other end to call the police. The unknown suspect grabbed the phone from Alaniz and broke the cord.
Duncan then walked to Alanizís office as she pushed and struggled with the suspect holding the gun. Duncan came back out with Alanizís purse in his hands. Alaniz then let go of the subject with the gun and began to struggle over possession of the purse with Duncan. The three, Duncan, Swank and the other unknown suspect were able to flee from Alaniz with her purse as she pursued them outside. However, when they entered a grey Lincoln, Alaniz grabbed the passenger door and windshield wiper in an attempt to stop them. They were able to drive off, knocking Alaniz to the ground where she scraped her left arm and bruised her head.
The vehicle, identified as a Lincoln Continental, was located at 1002 W. Silver Springs Blvd. by patrol units. The owner of the vehicle was B/M Stephen Jones, who consented to a search of his vehicle. The owner of the residence was identified as a Curtis Duncan, brother of Kernal Duncan. Outside at this residence, the victimís purse and wallet were located.
Detective Jorge Fernandez obtained warrants for the arrest of Duncan and Swank on 6/10/13 for one count each of Robbery with a Firearm. Information was later obtained that they had gone to Michigan. On 6/11/13, the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team and the U.S. Marshalís Office located both Duncan and Swank on the outstanding warrants and placed them under arrest.
The investigation is continuing as the identity of the other black male suspect is still being sought. Anyone with information on his identity and/or location is asked to contact Detective Jorge Fernandez at 352-369-7145 or call the main OPD line at 352-369-7000.
