OCALA POLICE DEPARTMENT JOINS THE SAFE SLEEP CAMPAIGN
OPD is joining the Safe Sleep Campaign to educated the public on the prevention of infant deaths due to unsafe sleep environments and provide cribs to families in need.
OCALA POLICE DEPARTMENT JOINS THE SAFE SLEEP CAMPAIGN

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) reports that since January 2013, 128 alleged reports of babies dying due to unsafe sleep have been called in to the Florida Abuse Hotline.
These tragedies could have been prevented, and now Florida government agencies, state officials, non-profit organizations and first responders have come together to launch The Safe Sleep Campaign. The campaign includes public outreach as well as free online training and materials for Florida's first responders in an effort to prevent unsafe sleep during routine calls and interactions with the public.
There are resources for parents/caregivers and first responders on the DCF site; go to the following link for more information: www.MyFLFamilies.com/SafeSleep
Although many caregivers want to provide beautiful sleep environments, the infants are not ready for this yet, as they are not able to move their heads away from stuffed animals, fluffy pillows, etc. and ensure they have a clear airway to breathe. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants sleep ALONE, oh their BACKS, in a CRIB. That crib needs to be clear of all pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, toys, bumpers and sleep positioners. Infants definitely need to sleep alone in a crib, as the risk of death is 40 percent higher for infants who sleep in adult beds.
Another aspect of the Safe Sleep Campaign is the encouragement for the public to donate new, unused Pack and Plays to designated fire, emergency and law enforcement agencies. These pack and plays will be distributed to low-income families through Healthy Start organizations or child-abuse investigators.
The Ocala Police Department will be accepting these donations in the front lobby of the main headquarters building, located at 402 S. Pine Ave., Ocala, FL 34471.
