The Ocala Police Department is proud to announce that we received a first place award in the Dui Challenge
On Friday July 13, 2012 Major Dennis Yonce, Lieutenant Butch Green, Sergeant Mike Sommer and Traffic Officer William Jodicke were invited to Florida Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony in Orlando Florida.
On Friday July 13, 2012 Major Dennis Yonce, Lieutenant Butch Green, Sergeant Mike Sommer and Traffic Officer William Jodicke were invited to Florida Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony in Orlando Florida. The Florida law Enforcement Liasion Program, part of the Florida Department of Transportation sponsored the event which awards agencies from around the state of Florida for excelling in the area of traffic safety and enforcement. The award categories include Click it or Ticket Challenge, DUI Challenge, Motor Unit Challenge, and the Florida Law Enforcement Challenge.


The Ocala Police Department is proud to announce that we received a first place award in the Dui challenge for all agencies having between 151 to 249 sworn officers. This award included a $15000 grant to purchase traffic safety equipment. The criteria for this challenge included arrests, and reduction in DUI related crashes involving injuries and deaths, in 2010 we had 3 DUI related deaths and in 2011 we had 1. DUI crashes were reduced in 2011 by nearly 50%.


Ocala Police Chief Greg Graham stated he would like to thank the surrounding agencies for their assistance helping with the multiple DUI operations that greatly assisted in achieving these goals. The Ocala Police Department had 161 DUI arrests in 2010 and increased the amount of DUI arrests in 2011 to 325. Chief Graham also stated that he is very proud of all the Ocala Police Officers that contributed to not only winning this award but for making the streets a safe place for our community.


Sergeant Mike Sommer stated with the $15000.00 grant award he was able to purchase a speed monitoring trailer, and several radar units to continue the improvement of traffic safety enforcement in the city of Ocala.


Sergeant Mike Sommer stated the award was the combined efforts of traffic unit members assigned to DUI enforcement and those who participated in the DUI grant program, Officers William Jodicke and Dan Wright, were recently recognized by MADD ( Mothers Against Drunk Driving ) of Florida and IDEAVS ( Impaired Driving Education and Victims Services ) for having over 100 DUI Arrests in 2011, Officers Andrew Ritz and Charles Hunt were recognized by IDEAVS for having over 20 DUI arrests in 2011.
