The Ocala Police Department Bicycle Unit participating in the 15th Annual Tour de Force Bicycle Ride April 16th thru April 20th, 2012

The 2012 Tour de Force police charity bicycle ride is set to kick off April 16th in North Miami Beach and conclude in Daytona Beach Shores on April 20th. The Tour is a 5-day ride that averages approximately 50-55 miles each day at a moderate pace (15-17 mph) and will pass through 42 law enforcement jurisdictions including Ocala.

The tour is a fully supported ride with police escorts provided by the Florida Highway Patrol, Sheriff’s Departments and various law enforcement agencies throughout the state. This is an awareness ride, not a race! Breaks are scheduled approximately every 12-13 miles and the ride is designed to accommodate both inexperienced riders and seasoned cyclists. Last year over 500 law enforcement personnel from across the state participated with 30 riders completing the entire 270-mile trek to Daytona Beach Shores.

The inaugural 1997 Tour was dedicated to Trooper Robert Smith who was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver. The Tour has grown in size each year and we are proud to announce that as a non-profit charity organization, we have raised over $200,000.00 for families of fallen officers and law enforcement related organizations. A total of $30,000 was paid out to six families for the 2011 Tour.

This year’s tour will benefit the families of all fallen Florida Law Enforcement Officers that were lost in the line of duty during 2011. Our goal is to raise $100,000.00. The citizens, media and various law enforcement departments throughout the state have supported the ride over the past eight years’ with great enthusiasm.

Please support the 2012 ride by providing riders, escorts or traffic details as the riders make their way through the state. If you are interested in participating please contact Detective Craig Catlin via email at craig.catlin@nmbpd.org for further details.

Denny’s has donated 25,000 “Denny’s Tour de Force Kits”. The kits contain a Thin Blue Line memorial bracelet and FOUR $5 OFF coupons to Denny’s. The kits are $5, so you visit Denny’s once and it will pay for itself and 3 more coupons to use. Every dollar goes to the families of Florida Officers killed in the line of duty.

The Ocala Police Department Record’s Section will be selling the Tour de Force Kit’s at the Ocala Police Department located at 402 South Pine Avenue Ocala, Florida. If you have any questions about the Thin Blue Line Bracelet Kit’s, or the event you can contact Sergeant Erica Hay at 352-369-7025
