A teacher/coach from Francis Marion Military Academy was arrested today by Detective Jorge Fernandez for Interference with Child Custody.
On Friday, 1/10/14, the parent of a 15 year old student of Francis Marion Military Academy reported her daughter as a runaway. The mother had found teacher, Duane Ernest Adams, DOB 11/04/59, waiting outside her home for her daughter to take her to school that morning. She had asked for him to leave and she had driven her daughter to school herself. However, the child did not come home that afternoon and it was learned that she had not attended school that day.
Throughout the weekend the child's parents brought forward information on possible people their daughter was with and places she might have gone. Officers followed up on each of these tips, but were unable to locate the runaway child.
One of the persons spoken to was the teacher/coach Adams, who denied any knowledge of the child's whereabouts when spoken to by Officer Hoffman on Sunday, 1/12/14, and again when he spoke to Det. Fernandez and Sgt. Young on Monday, 1/13/14.
Information was obtained on Monday, 1/13/14, that the runaway child was at the Steak N' Shake, 3800 SW College Rd. in Ocala. Officer Jessica Wong responded and made contact with the child and she was returned to her parents.
The child and her parents met with Det. Fernandez on 1/14/14, as did the teacher, Duane Adams. It was learned through the interviews that Adams had taken the child from school on 1/10/14 and allowed her to stay in his apartment during school. That evening he took her to Daytona where they stayed in a motel for two nights. On Sunday, 1/12/14, Adams drove the child to the Ocala RV Campgrounds, 3200 SW 38th Ave., where he rented a cabin for her for four days. Adams advised to having lied to police about the runaway child's whereabouts and his involvement.
He denied any inappropriate physical contact with the child.
Adams was arrested on 1/14/14, charged with 1 count of Interference with Child Custody (Felony) and booked into the Marion County Jail.
