Shooting Incident
An 82 year old woman suffered a gunshot wound at her NE residence on October 30, 2013 and was taken to a local hospital for surgery. Detectives are investigating.

On today's date, October 30, 2013, at approximately 1:26pm, officers responded to 3731 NE 21 Lane in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, they found that W/F Edith Kerekes, 82 yoa, had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen area. She was transported to a local hospital and was in stable condition going into surgery.

Ms. Kerekes' son, W/M Attila Frank Kerekes, 55 yoa, who goes by "Sonny", was present and advised that the shooting was accidental. The scene of the incident was secured in order to obtain a search warrant and Sonny agreed to accompany detectives back to OPD headquarters and speak with them.

Sonny advised that he'd gone to get the gun because his mother wanted to see it. He advised that it was a Charter Arms .38 caliber revolver that had been his father's; Sonny had been in possession of it since his father's death in the early 1980's and had used it to kill sharks when he was a commercial fisherman. Sonny said that the gun when off accidentally as he took it from the bag it was stored in; it had been wrapped in a cloth and stored in a bag for several years. The bullet went through a wall, across the living room and struck Ms. Kerekes, who was in the kitchen. Sonny said that he had no idea that his mother had been struck by the bullet until she indicated that she had pain in her abdominal area. That's when he observed that she had been shot and called for help.

At this time, Ms. Kerekes has not been able to be spoken to, as she is still in surgery. Sonny has been cooperative with detectives, who are still in the process of investigating this incident. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
