The local Boys & Girls Club was broken into over the past weekend and a large amount of damage within was done.
On Sunday, July 14, 2013, at approximately 12:48 pm, the Ocala Police Department responded to the Boys & Girls Club, located at 800 SW 12th Ave. in Ocala. The report was in reference to an overnight burglary to their buildings.
Officer Dale Parish responded and found that, although someone had broken into the south building, the north building sustained the largest amount of damage. Glass windows were broken to gain entry and once inside, the culprits did considerable damage to the facility. Mirrors and glass appliances were broken, as were the glass backboards of the basketball nets in the gymnasium. Paint was dumped on the floor in one room, a sink broken in one of the bathrooms and all the faucets in the building had been turned and left on with the drains plugged. Additionally, pieces of cardboard had been stuffed into the burners of the gas stovetop in the kitchen and a gas burner left on. Although the paper caught fire, it did not spread from the stovetop.
The Ocala Police Department is seeking the help of anyone with any knowledge of the identity of the person(s) responsible for this malicious act of destruction. This is a facility and organization that serves our community by providing a safe and positive environment for youth in our community. Anyone with information in reference to this crime is asked to contact Detective Steve Daunhauer at 352-368-5405 or call OPD’s main line at 352-369-7000.
