Traffic Crash at US Hwy 441 & SR 40
A crash that occurred between an SUV and a semi tractor trailer at the intersection of US Hwy 441 & SR 40 caused this major intersection to be closed for several hours.
Case #201300053700

On Tuesday, March 19, 2012, at approximately 1:28 a.m., the Ocala Police Department responded to the intersection of West Silver Springs Boulevard (S.R. 40) and Pine Avenue (U.S. 441) in reference to a crash.

Pursuant our investigation, it was determined that a 1996 Peterbilt Tractor/Trailer, occupied by Robert Johnson (driver) and Lisa Mead (passenger) of California, was traveling northbound on South Pine Avenue approaching the intersection. According to witnesses, a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban, being driven by David Allen Coe of Texas, was traveling eastbound on West Silver Springs Boulevard, approaching the intersection, and failed to stop for the red light. Coe's Suburban was struck on its passenger side. The collision sent Coe's Suburban into the parking lot situated on the northeast corner of the intersection. The tractor/trailer overturned and slidon its sideinto the traffic control box and cement light pole also situated on the northeast corner of the intersection; the secondary crash (into the traffic control box and light pole) resulted in diesel fuel and fresh produce spilling in the process. All three (3) occupants were transported to area hospitals, but thankfully, none of the injuries were deemed life-threatening.

In all likelihood, the process associated with clearing the intersection, cleaning up the diesel spillage, and restoring the traffic control lights will be lengthy. Those motorists who normally travel to work, school, etc. utilizing a route which includes passage through this intersection should expect some delays due to some lane closures. At the time of this writing, the following detours have also been effected: 1) westbound traffic (approaching Pine Avenue) is being re-directed left (southbound) onto SW 3rd Avenue and around the intersection; and 2) northbound traffic (approaching West Silver Springs Boulevard) is being re-directed either left (westbound) or right (eastbound) onto West Silver Springs Boulevard around the intersection.
