On June 30, 2009, violation of the Safety Belt Law becomes a primary traffic stop.
On June 30, 2009, the Dori Slosberg and Katie Marchetti Safety Belt Law goes into effect. This legislation mandates the use of seatbelts in motor vehicles; seatbelts will now be a primary enforceable traffic violation that will result in a citation to the violator. This means that the primary reason for a traffic stop can be for not wearing a seat belt.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates primary enforcement will prevent 142 fatalities in Florida annually. Florida joins 26 states that already have laws for primary enforcement of safety belts. In 2007, Florida ranked 35th in seat belt usage with a usage rate of 79.1 percent.
The Ocala Police Department wants to make sure that all of the citizens are aware of this new law and abiding by it, as we want all of our citizens to remain safe. Officers will be out on the roads enforcing this law, so absolutely “Click It or Ticket”.
