Burglar Caught Due to Cashing Stolen Lottery Tickets
The man who burglarized the Big Midget store on NW 10th St. was arrested today, due to cashing in the stolen lottery tickets.
On Tuesday, 12/18/12, at approximately 11:28 PM, Officers responded to the Big Midget store, 1107 NW 10th St., in reference to an alarm. Upon arrival it was found that entry was made via a hole in the exterior wall on the west side of the business. The store owner reported several lottery tickets stolen along with a small amount of cash. Surveillance footage showed a black male subject wearing a shiny black jacket, black pants, black shoes and a dark hat committing this burglary.
Detective James Deas was assigned to work this case. He made contact with a Florida Lottery Agent, Donald Martis, in reference to the stolen lottery tickets. Mardis was able to advise that the tickets stolen had been redeemed for $58.00 at another local store – The Big Apple, 1943 W. SR 40 – at 7:58 and 7:59 AM on today’s date, 12/19/12. Through video, B/M Jerry M. Stevens, DOB 10/3/61, was identified as the person cashing in the lottery tickets. Upon being confronted, Stevens confirmed he had cashed in the lottery tickets, but denied committing the burglary. However, clothing was found in his home that matched the clothing of the burglar in the surveillance video.
Stevens has previously been convicted of multiple burglaries and just got released from DOC for drug charges on 9/29/12. He had also been previously arrested for a burglary to this same business, with the same method of entry, in the year 2000.
Stevens was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail. He is charged with one (1) count of Burglary – Unoccupied Structure, one (1) count of Petit Theft, and five (5) counts of Dealing in Stolen Property Involved in a Theft. Bond is set at $55,500.00.
Please note, surveillance videos mentioned above are not available at this time.
