Carjacking incident ends in arrest thanks to citizens willing to help.

On June 2, 2009, at approximately 16:21 PM, officers responded to Murphy Gas 4986 East State Road 40 in reference to a subject carjacking a 2000 Lincoln Town car from the victim while she was gassing up her vehicle. Victim 66 year old Carlanna Mercer of Ocala was pushed away while the suspect John S. Michael was getting into the vehicle and stealing it. The victim sustained only minor injury that did not require treatment.
A Murphy gas customer, Joseph Damico Jr. saw what was occurring at the gas station and struggled with the suspect in an attempt to foil the theft. Garry Combs saw Mr. Damico struggling with the suspect and chasing the vehicle across the parking lot and followed the suspect and vehicle while calling police.
Officer Keith Jarvis observed the vehicle traveling north bound on N.E. 25th Ave at 24th Street and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle fled north bound to 49th street, west bound to West Anthony Road, north bound to 326,East on 326 to Old 301, North to 329 west to 301 and north to the 16700 block of 301 where the suspect vehicle was stopped using the “PIT” by MCSO and the driver arrested.
