Abandoned Baby
On Saturday, May 30, 2009, a 3 to 7 day old infant was found abandoned in a box on the side of a local roadway.
On May 30, 2009 at approximately 5:07 PM, Officers of the Ocala Police Department responded to NW 24 Avenue and 17 Street in reference to an abandoned baby. Ocala Fire Department and Ambulance Service also responded. A white female baby, approximately 3 to 7 days old, was found when a passerby drove by and observed the baby’s hand sticking out of the top of a box. He then notified 911 and we responded. EMS immediately took the child from the scene to the hospital for examination. The child appears unharmed and in good health. The child was found in a QVC box, along with a blanket, article of clothing and a diaper.
Department of Children’s and Family Investigators responded and have taken custody of the child. Detective Wayne Green of our Agency responded and is conducting the investigation at this time.
We are looking to identify a suspicious suspect and vehicle that was seen in the area on the 29th at approximately 7:30 PM. Vehicle was described as a grey compact pickup truck with a white topper, driven by a white male.

The public is reminded that Florida State Statutes allows for an unwanted newborn to be left at a hospital, fire station or other emergency medical service station without it being considered child neglect.

Anyone with information in reference to this case is asked to call the Ocala Police Department, at (352) 369-7000 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (352) 368-7867 (STOP) or go to www.ocalacrimestoppers.com.
