On Friday June 10, 2011 The Ocala Police Department along with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, The Belleview Police Department, and The Dunnellon Police Department will be operating a Comprehensive Roadside Safety Checkpoint in the 700 block of East Silver Springs Boulevard from 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM ( midnight ). The checkpoints major function will be to identify and apprehend impaired drivers. The Ocala Police Department will also be operating a saturated patrol operation over the weekend. The Officers working the saturated patrol will be concentrating on locating and arresting impaired drivers. For drivers under 21 years of age they will lose their drivers license for a blood alcohol content of .02 or higher, for drivers over 21 the legal limit is .08 or higher. If you have any questions concerning the checkpoint you can contact traffic supervisor Sergeant Mike Sommer at 352-369-7030.

Traditionally we have seen an increase in teen drinking over graduation weekend and we encourage parents to talk with their teens about the dangers of underage drinking and driving. Also there is an increase in house parties which can lead to teen drinking and driving. If your teenager is planning a party ensure there is adult supervision and do not allow underage drinking or you are subject to arrest.
