Bombing
On May 9, 2009, a suspicious package that turned out to be a bomb was delivered to an apartment at Paradise Apartments, located in the 1900 block of SW 31st Ave.
On May 9, 2009, at approximately 11:30 PM, at Paradise Apartments 1900 block of S.W. 31st Avenue, a package 4 inches x 7 inches was left at an apartment. The resident came home and brought the package into her residence and attempted to open the package. Upon partially opening the package the resident determined it was suspicious threw the package into the bushes outside of the residence and left her home. The resident returned home at 4:00 AM and notified the Ocala Police Department.

Officers responded to the incident and when Sergeant E. Hooper attempted to look at the package, it detonated. Sergeant Hooper was not injured in the explosion. Assets from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Unit, Marion County Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Unit, and the Ocala Fire Department responded to assist in the investigation. The Ocala Police Department is aggressively investigating this incident using any and all available sources to identify the suspect or suspects responsible for this crime.

Florida State Statute clearly states that any person who manufactures, purchases, transports, keeps, stores, possesses, distributes, sells, or uses any explosive with the intent to harm life, limb, or property is guilty of a felony of the second degree.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Detective Jarvis of the Ocala Police Department, at (352) 369-7000 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (352) 368-7867 (STOP) or go to www.ocalacrimestoppers.com.
