Man arrested at local Publix for purse snatch robbery

On 03-01-11 the Ocala Police Department responded to a robbery at Publix, 3101 SW 34 Avenue, Suite 500. Officers made contact with the 57 YOA, female victim who advised she was loading groceries into her vehicle when she was approached by a white male. The victim reported the white male grabbed her purse and attempted to take it from her. The victim reported she pulled away from the subject until the purse strap broke and he managed to take possession of her purse. The victim stated the subject then entered a gray car parked next to her. The victim stated she reached in the vehicle in an attempt to retrieve her purse and during the struggle broke the turn signal indicator. The white male then exited his vehicle and kicked the victim. Witnesses observed the subject flee the parking lot in the gray car, they gave officers on scene the tag number and the information was sent out to other officers.
Detective Miguel Gauthier observed the vehicle exiting from I-75 onto SR 40. Detective Gauthier followed the vehicle, which did a U-Turn and proceeded to turn back onto I-75. Detective Gauthier initiated a traffic stop on I-75 and made contact with the driver Michael Steven Severson, WM, 07-24-1981. During the stop Severson admitted to taking the victim’s purse.
The victim identified Severson as the robber and he was subsequently arrested for strong arm robbery. Detectives were also able to recover the victim’s purse. Severson will be held at the Marion County Jail on $10000 bond.
