OPD is cracking down on impaired driving this holiday season.
The Ocala Police Department continues its commitment to saving lives with a strong push on traffic safety this holiday season. The holiday season is a time of larger traffic volumes and an increase in impaired drivers. The Ocala Police Department seeks to ensure that everyone gets to celebrate the holidays safely and will be putting a large emphasis on a policy of zero tolerance for impaired drivers.
We have reviewed recent past statistics, which show a decrease of alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Marion County from 37 in 2008 to 26 in 2009, and have reallocated some personnel to cater to our goal of continuing to decrease these numbers. We have designated 4 officers specifically to night traffic safety and impaired driving suppression. We are able to do this type of specific assignment of officers due to an FDOT grant, which also assists in funding safety checkpoints. One comprehensive roadside safety checkpoint has already been scheduled for the night of Friday, December 3, 2010.
Once again, the Ocala Police Department seeks to make our roadways safe for everyone and to save lives. We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.
