SCHOOL ZONES AND BUS STOPS
School begins Monday, August 23, 2010, and OPD will be out enforcing the laws on school zones and school bus stops.
The Ocala Police Department would like to remind all citizens that Marion County Schools are back in session on Monday, August 23, 2010. This means that all school zones will now be operating and drivers should be watching for the flashing lights that indicated these zones. Officers from the Ocala Police Department will be in and around these school zones, making sure that all drivers are adhering to the proper speed. Fines for speeding in school zones are as follows: MPH OVER FINE 1 - 9 $156.00 10-14 $306.00 15-19 $406.00 20-29 $456.00 30 + Court Appearance In addition, this means that school busses will be in operation and transporting our children to and from school. All drivers should be on the lookout for stopped school buses and make sure to abide by the laws in stopping for them. The only exception in stopping for a stopped school bus is upon a divided highway where there exists and unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median, or a physical barrier; then drivers traveling from the opposite direction are not required to stop. The fine for passing a stopped school bus is $271.00. If a vehicle passes a properly stopped school bus on the side of the bus where children exit and enter the bus, the result is a mandatory court appearance. OPD encourages all citizens to remember to be mindful of the safety of the youth in our community by abiding by these laws. We want all of our children to be able to travel safely, both to and from school, and will, therefore, be on the lookout for violators.
