Juveniles Arrested in Car Burglaries
Three juveniles are arrested in reference to multiple Auto Burglary and Theft cases that occurred in the Northeast area of Ocala.
On today’s date, August 11, 2010, at approximately 4:15 AM, the Ocala Police Department received a call from a delivery person for the Ocala Star Banner, Carmen Cochran, advising that there was a suspicious person in the driveway of a house in the 1600 block of NE 16th Ave. Cochran advised that he could see doors to vehicles parked in the area open and the suspicious male looking into the cars. He described the suspicious male as wearing a black shirt, black pants or shorts and carrying a backpack.

Units responded to the area and began searching with the assistance of Cochran, who was able to advise the last place he saw the subject and the last known direction of travel. A short time after arriving on scene, Officer David Vale advised that he had located the subject, who was running from him. A short foot pursuit ensued. The subject was apprehended by Corporal Joseph Kelly with the assistance of Officer Vale and Officer Matt Sams.

At this point, it was found that multiple vehicles in the area had been broken into. The Ocala Police Department had also been working numerous recent auto burglaries of the same nature and in the same geographical area. Detectives from the Ocala Police Department were called out at that time.

During the course of the investigation, Detectives were able to recover 3 firearms, a taser and numerous items to include GPS units, IPods, etc. Two of the 3 firearms were found to be from OPD cases, while one was found to have been stolen in a case being worked by Det. Walter Ray of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Both agencies are now working cooperatively to solve numerous auto burglaries in each jurisdiction that are tied to the same suspects.

Currently, Detectives Scott Rowe and Jamie Buchbinder of the Ocala Police Department are conducting the investigations into what appears to be in excess of 35 incidents of auto burglary and theft. Three juveniles have been arrested on felony charges at this time. W/M juvenile Nick Gershaw, DOB 04/01/93, has been charged with 1 count of Grand Theft in reference to a golf cart stolen from Spanish Oaks; this is the only case he has been tied to. W/M Christopher Mann, DOB 12/08/95, and W/M Zachary Jones, DOB 01/08/93 are both currently charged with 1 count of Armed Burglary each. Further charges will be forthcoming on Mann and Jones.
