Two Arrested for Child Abuse and Drug Charges
Two women were arrested at the Ramada Inn on NW Blitchton Road in reference to drug charges and Child Abuse.
On Sunday, August 8, 2010, at approximately 9:53 pm, Officer Casey Walsh responded to the Ramada Inn, located at 3810 NW Blitchton Rd., in reference to a caller requesting a well-being check on an infant in a room there. The caller could not advise exactly which room the child and mother were in, but did give the name of “Erica” for the mother.

The clerk and security guard were able to direct Officer Walsh and Sergeant Erica Hay to a room where two women and an infant were staying. Upon arrival at that room, they made contact first with w/f Peggy D. Dutton, DOB 09/08/78, who opened the door. Dutton advised the room was hers and that her boyfriend had rented it. Officer Walsh observed a thick layer of smoke in the room and a second female on the bed laughing. The second female was identified as w/f Erica J. Orme, DOB 11/06/83. Orme advised that she had a 2 month old son, who was asleep. The officers were invited into the room by Dutton to check on the well-being of the child.

While in the room, Officer Walsh and Sgt. Hay located marijuana and various drug paraphernalia. Although Dutton denied using drugs on this date, Orme, who was now holding her infant son, advised that she and Dutton had been smoking “crack” cocaine in the room. She advised that they would take turns; one would watch the infant while the other smoke “crack”. Orme also advise that the two had been also been drinking alcohol during this time.

Officer Walsh requested that EMS respond to the scene due to the drug usage in the infant’s presence and her observations of the child being lethargic. The infant was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and DCF was notified for immediate response.

Dutton was arrested and charged with one count each of Child Abuse, Possession of Marijuana Less than 20 grams, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Orme was arrested and charged with one count each of Child Abuse and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Both were transported to the Marion County Jail.
